Soot Probe

The soot probe is an intrusive probe that can be used to determine soot concentrations in overfire regions of large scale fires and within exhaust chimneys.

• Determining soot concentrations in upper layer of large scale burns in rooms and buildings
• Estimating the opacity at different locations inside exhaust chimneys

The Soot Probe is a custom made instrument and can be tailored to a customer’s specifications. The system will include all items and software needed for data capture.

The extinction of a laser light is measured across a 50 mm gap. The extinction is converted to soot volume fractions using the refractive indices of soot.
