Characterization of a Coal Slurry Burner En’Urga Inc. characterized the performance of a coal slurry burner for Dynegy Power Corporation. En’Urga Inc. designed and fabricated two scaled down versions of the coal slurry burner used by Dynegy Power Corporation in their coal gas production facility. An experimental and numerical study of the droplet distributions and pressure losses was conducted for the coal slurry burner. The design and fabrication of the scaled down burners was extremely challenging due to the very small sizes of the passages and vanes within the burner. Glycerine and water were used to simulate coal slurry and the pressure drop in the scaled down burners measured using transducers. The droplet size distributions were measured using a Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer. The results were scaled up to provide estimates of the droplet distributions and pressure losses in the industrial coal slurry burner. Based on the study and recommendations of En’Urga Inc., Dynegy Power Corporation was able to improve the life time and performance of their coal slurry burners at their production facility. |
